The latest in Virginia politics

Today is the one-year anniversary of Virginia Scope’s existence. In the past year, hundreds of people have subscribed and donated to help Virginia Scope and this newsletter specifically grow to reach thousands of readers each day. But with these statewide campaigns and the 100 House of Delegate seats up for election, we need to continue to raise funds in order to provide as much coverage as possible. In today’s newsletter, we have an audio recording from an education-focused press call with Democratic Party of Virginia Chairwoman Susan Swecker, Henrico Delegate Schuyler VanValkenburg, and Loudoun County School Board Vice-Chair Atoosa Reaser. Politifact retracts fact-check on McAuliffe

Correction, June 30: When PolitiFact Virginia initially published this report on June 29, we failed to include comments Youngkin made outside of an U.S. Export-Import Bank conference that were on similar topics, because in our reporting process, we failed to reach out to the McAuliffe campaign. This goes against our reporting standards, which require us to contact political campaigns that we write about. We’ve corrected that omission in this report and apologize for the error.

McAuliffe fact-check retraction leaves state buzzing - Potomac Local

By Uriah Kiser

Virginia public radio station WCVE in Richmond retracted a column posted to its website today — a fact check piece about former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

The piece, which was also shared by statewide news aggregator Va News from the Virginia Public Access Project, called out McAuliffe for falsely claiming his Republican opponent, Glenn Youngkin, praised him during a panel discussion the Youngkin hosted in 2018, on which McAuliffe was a panelist.

AAPI Victory Fund and AAPI Coalition Partners Endorse Terry McAuliffe

The AAPI Victory Fund and partner Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) organizations - Democratic Asian Americans of Virginia, They See Blue and South Asians for America (SAFA) - endorsed Terry McAuliffe for governor this morning.

“We’re thrilled to throw our support behind candidates Terry McAuliffe, Hala Ayala and Mark Herring for Virginia’s 2021 legislative races. As Virginia’s rising electorate necessitates swift legislative change, AAPI Victory Fund has full confidence that our endorsed candidates will rise to the occasion and keep the best interest of every constituent—especially that of our AAPI community—in mind,” said AAPI Victory Fund President Varun Nikore. “Throughout their tenure in public office, McAuliffe, Ayala and Herring have made clear their dedication to inclusion and diversity, and we at AAPI Victory Fund are proud to endorse three outstanding candidates who are on the cutting-edge of racial, cultural and socioeconomic equity. We will spare no expense in ensuring that Virginia remains solidly blue. This is the most important election in Virginia history. AAPI voters were 10% of the electorate in 2019 in the commonwealth. We will once again be the margin that carries our Democratic champions across the finish line today.”

Facing GOP opposition in fall, Del. Hope kicks off re-election campaign - Inside NOVA

by SCOTT McCAFFREY

He’ll be facing his first general-election opposition in six years, but Del. Patrick Hope also is focused on doing his part helping Virginia Democrats keep their statewide majority intact.

“This is the most important election in your life,” Hope said, acknowledging after chuckles from the audience that’s what politicians say every year, during a June 27 ice-cream social that served as an informal campaign kickoff.
