TODAY’S SPONSOR: Virginians Against Neighborhood Slot Machines
Faith leaders from across the Commonwealth are voicing their opposition to deceptive neighborhood slot machines stating, “people are crying out for many things, but gambling in every gas station, convenience store, restaurant and rest stop is not one of them. We encourage Governor Youngkin to stand up for Virginia’s communities and stop SB 212.”
Youngkin signed 150 bills Thursday
Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced Thursday that he signed 150 bills into law.
“I’m proud to sign these bipartisan bills, which include Senator Dave Suetterlein's and Delegate Chris Runion’s bill to lower DMV fees for all Virginians, Delegate Betsy Carr’s and Senator Mamie Locke’s bill they worked on with the Virginia Chamber of Commerce to expedite the permitting process for significant economic development opportunities, and Delegate Karrie Delaney’s bill she worked on with Attorney General Jason Miyares to combat elder abuse,” he said. “I’m also grateful for the opportunity to sign bills by Delegate Shelly Simonds, Delegate Rae Cousins, and Delegate Destiny LeVere Bolling that enhance our efforts to improve maternal health outcomes in the Commonwealth and support access to doula services.”
The complete list of bills Youngkin has signed so far is available here.
Freedom Caucus Demands
The House Freedom Caucus, chaired by Rep. Bob Good, R-VA05, has a list of demands from President Joe Biden before they support additional federal funding to repair the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.
Good wants help from the Speaker against McGuire - Politico
The embattled Good now wants Johnson’s endorsement and a pledge not to help his primary opponent, who’s trying to turn support for former President Donald Trump into a wedge issue with the base. Good’s challenger is a major threat to the second-term Freedom Caucus chief’s future in Congress — and as center-right colleagues gang up on him, help from Johnson and his allies could be a major boon.
“I would think that he would endorse all the incumbents — I want everybody to endorse me, including the speaker,” Good told POLITICO when asked if he had raised the topic of an endorsement with Johnson, making clear that he wouldn’t delve further into “that private conversation.”
Kicking off 2024 reelection bid, Kaine says ‘Virginians are not mean-spirited’ - Virginia Mercury
by Graham Moomaw
As he launched his 2024 reelection campaign in Richmond this week, U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., said being back in the city’s Jackson Ward neighborhood felt like “time has collapsed.”
Three decades ago, that was where he got his political start knocking doors in his first run for the Richmond City Council. After serving as Virginia’s lieutenant governor and governor and extensively traveling the state, Kaine told supporters Tuesday at Richmond’s Hippodrome Theater, he’s confident Virginians will again reject former President Donald Trump and Republicans like him who “want to tear us down and tear us apart.”
“In good times or bad times, Virginians are not mean-spirited, pessimistic, name-calling complainers,” Kaine said. “We are upbeat, can-do, roll-up-your-sleeves, get-the-job-done people. We stand up for democracy and equality. We stand up for economic opportunity. We stand up for reproductive rights and voting rights. And most importantly, we stand up for each other.”
