District Profile: VA-05
Incumbent Rep. Bob Good (R) is facing a Republican primary challenge and Democrats have three candidates seeking the nomination for midterms this year.
Good earned the Republican nomination after a primary challenge to Rep. Denver Riggleman in 2020 from the right. Good defeated Riggleman in a convention then won the general election over Cameron Webb in November.
Virginia’s fifth congressional district pulls in voters from 24 different localities.
Albermarle County makes up the largest portion with roughly 89,000 voters (14%) coming from the county.
According to an analysis from VPAP, Republican gubernatorial candidate Glenn Youngkin won this district by 21 points in 2021.
Fifth district Republicans are using a convention on May 21 in Farmville to choose their nominee. Here is the primary challenger to Good:
Dan Moy is challenging Good for the Republican nomination. He resides in Charlottesville and earned a doctorate in history from the University of Oklahoma. He also graduated from the Joint Forces Staff College, the West Point Seminar in Military History, and the George C. Marshall Center’s “Leaders for the 21st Century” international security studies program. Moy serves as an Adjunct Professor for the University of Virginia’s Batten School of Public Policy. He retired from the Air Force in 2016 after 27 years.
Democrats will be choosing their nominee in a primary election on June 21. Here are the three candidates:
Andy Parker was on the Henry County Board of Supervisors until 2015 when his daughter Alison was shot and killed on live television as she was reporting a story. “I kept asking that the videos be taken down, but the tech companies kept ignoring me. And the videos kept being uploaded, over and over again. Almost seven years later it’s still happening. Some evil ghouls even made money selling ads around footage of my child’s death. And I cannot let that stand,” Parker says on his website. Parker also says he spent years advocating against the power tech companies have and the violent content they spread until Jan. 6 happened. “Like so many of you I was shaken to the core by what I saw. I was furious to find out that the Congressman from Virginia’s 5th district, from my home state, from my community, participated in the insurrection. His name, ironically, is Bob Good. Now there are lots of legitimate disagreements we can have over policy. But I draw the line at pushing the Big Lie. That’s what Bob has done, and it isn’t good. It’s terrible. Bob was there on January 6th, supporting a violent attempt to block the peaceful transfer of power. That’s not good. It’s terrible.”
Josh Throneburg is ordained minister and a small business owner. “America is facing incredible challenges. Our planet is in crisis and there’s no guarantee that it will remain habitable,” Throneburg says on his campaign website. “Our national debt is spiraling out of control and there’s no plan to address it. Communities of color suffer under systemic racism while rural communities remain long neglected. Democracy, the beating heart of this incredible nation, is under attack.”
Warren McLellan works in agriculture and land management and is originally from South Hill. He says he has lived in VA-05 the majority of his life. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in economics from UVA. “Warren will stay focused on building a strong economy with well-paying jobs available for anyone ready to roll up their sleeves,” his campaign site reads. “He understands that we all want great schools for our kids, along with affordable health care, safe streets, and the freedom to live as we please.”
Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA02) tests positive for Covid-19
A spokesperson for Rep. Luria released the following statement Sunday.
“After testing negative for COVID-19 throughout the week, Rep. Luria received a positive test result this morning. Rep. Luria is vaccinated and boosted and is experiencing mild symptoms. She is thankful for the protection provided by the COVID-19 vaccine. Rep. Luria is currently quarantining and will continue to follow CDC guidance. She encourages everyone to get the lifesaving vaccine.”
