Veterans push back on lawmakers asking to address skill games when they meet this month
Members of the Virginia military community sent a letter to Gov. Glenn Youngkin and the General Assembly asking them to focus solely on restoring benefits to the Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program, commonly referred to as VMSDEP, when they meet this month.
Benefits to VMSDEP were cut in the final budget passed by the General Assembly and signed by Youngkin. The program provides a tuition waiver for families of fallen or disabled veterans.
After immediate opposition and Youngkin's urging, lawmakers agreed to meet again this month to try to restore those benefits.
“It is clear we must repeal the substantive changes included in [the program],” he said in a letter to lawmakers earlier this month.
Veterans stress the importance of this program in helping families who have experienced tragedies.
