House Republicans respond to Youngkin’s gas tax suspension proposal
In case you missed it, Governor Glenn Youngkin announced Wednesday that he will be proposing emergency legislation to suspend the gas entire gas tax in Virginia for three months during the upcoming special session of the General Assembly.
According to the announcement from the governor, his proposal will use $437 million in “unanticipated transportation revenues” to support the gas tax holiday.
“These rising gas prices are hurting Virginians, and we need to do something about it," Youngkin said Wednesday.
House Speaker Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah endorsed the plan from Youngkin.
"Anyone who buys groceries or gasoline knows Virginia’s families are being squeezed more than they have in a long time. Inflation is the highest it’s been since Reagan’s first term, gas prices have skyrocketed, and we aren’t seeing any real leadership from Washington to address it," Gilbert said in a statement.
The plan would eliminate the 26 cent tax in the months of May, June, and July, and phase it back in slowly in August and September. The Governor's proposal would also cap the annual adjustment to the gas tax at no more than two percent per year
"Governor Youngkin’s proposal will ease the pain at the pump for families, and it will do so without harming the Commonwealth’s transportation funding. This is a responsible, common-sense measure to help all Virginians struggling with increased costs," Gilbert continued. "I look forward to working with the Governor and my colleagues in the General Assembly to see it enacted into law at the upcoming special session."
The money from the fuel tax is deposited in the Commonwealth Transportation Fund along with a portion of the state's sales and use tax. According to the governor’s office, the Commonwealth Transportation Fund is expecting $671.4 million unanticipated revenue in FY22 and $457.6 million in FY23.
The date of the special session has not been announced yet.
