Howell will not be seeking reelection
Senate Appropriations Co-Chair Janet Howell (D) will not be seeking reelection later this year. Howell has served in the state Senate for 32 years and says she is looking forward to spending more time traveling with her husband.
Her statement:
“I always suspected that I would know when it was time to retire. That time has arrived. After serving 32 years and accomplishing most of my legislative goals, I am stepping aside. I will not run for reelection but will complete my term.
“My focus has always been on education, from preschool through graduate school, and on helping our neighbors in need. We have made great progress yet much more must be done. Throughout my time in the Senate my husband, Hunt, has supported me in every way. Now we want more time together, with a lot of travel!”
Due to redistricting, Howell was drawn into the same district as her democratic colleague, Sen. Jennifer Boysko, in SD-38.
This is a strong Democratic district according to analysis from VPAP.
