Update from the GOP convention
Republicans might know who their gubernatorial nominee is today.
Glenn Youngkin has a strong lead after the first round of vote tabulation has been completed in the Republican nomination convention for governor. Youngkin received 32.9% of the vote, Pete Snyder finished round one in second with 25.8% of the vote, state Sen. Amanda Chase finished third with 20.8% of the first-round vote, Kirk Cox finished fourth with 13.5% of the first-round vote, Sergio de la Pena finished fifth with 6.4% of the first-round vote, Peter Doran finished sixth with .3% of the vote, and Octavia Johnson finished last with .2% of the vote.
The required 50.0001% of the vote threshold was not met by any of the candidates in the first round. This means a second round will take place and Octavia Johnson’s votes will be redistributed. Since she had such a small amount of votes, the second round should move fairly quickly. Then Peter Doran will be dropped for the third round and his votes would be redistributed. He also had a small % of the vote, meaning the third round should also move quickly.
If the remaining candidates stay in their current position throughout the second and third rounds, then Sergio de la Pena’s share of the vote would be redistributed in the fourth round. He received a much larger portion than Doran and Johnson, meaning the fourth round will take some time and could potentially get Snyder or Youngkin close to winning if they receive a large portion of de la Pena’s votes.
This all means it will likely be four more rounds of voting before we know who the Republican nominee will be. Stay tuned for more updates throughout the day.
