Welcome to the last day of the Virginia governor campaign season! I started this newsletter one year ago with the mission of providing the most in-depth and consistent coverage of Virginia’s statewide elections taking place tomorrow. With help from a lot of people, I feel like we achieved that goal.
I am writing this now to tell you that it won’t stop, not even close. The next year will be full of new political dynamics and shifting lines in Virginia. This newsletter will of course be focused on the new governor and all of the changes that they make in Virginia, but it will also have a very deep focus on the 2022 congressional elections, which will include the redistricting process that could drastically change the landscape of Virginia’s congressional delegation.

Donald Trump releases a long statement about Glenn Youngkin
Former President Donald Trump released a statement Monday morning attacking the media and praising Republican gubernatorial candidate Glenn Youngkin.
Read his full statement below:
“The Fake News media, together with some of the perverts doing ads ad nauseam on primarily Fox (Fox shouldn’t take those ads!), are trying to create an impression that Glenn Youngkin and I are at odds and don’t like each other. Importantly, this is not true, we get along very well together and strongly believe in many of the same policies. Especially when it comes to the important subject of education. The reason the Fake News and perverts are working over time is to try and convince people that we do not like each other, and therefore, my great and unprecedented Make America Great Again base will not show up to vote. Also, I am not a believer in the integrity of Virginia’s elections, lots of bad things went on, and are going on. The way you beat it is to flood the system and get out and vote. Remember this, Glenn Youngkin is a good man, a hardworking man, a successful man. He loves Virginia and wants to cut your taxes, save your children’s education, and many other very good things. Terry McAuliffe is a low-life politician who lies, cheats, and steals. He was a terrible high-tax governor and would be, if elected, an even worse governor again. I say to all of our millions of followers, don’t listen to the Fake News and misleading advertisements written largely by already-acknowledged perverts. Get out and vote for a man who will be a great governor, Glenn Youngkin!”
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe responded shortly after the statement was released by Trump.
“Today Trump said that he and Glenn ‘get along very well together and believe in many of the same policies.’ We have rejected the racism, the hate, the division, and the lies of Donald Trump twice. And tomorrow, we will do it again,” McAuliffe said.
Election day is tomorrow.

Virginia GOP sees Youngkin as chance to reverse party course - Associated Press
by Sarah Rankin
As he explains it, part of why Glenn Youngkin decided to run for Virginia governor was a feeling that the state’s beaten and battered Republican Party “could do so much better.”
That’s a polite way to put it. Since Virginia went blue for Barack Obama in 2008, Republicans have been on a downhill slide, the pace of which quickened during President Donald Trump’s administration. The GOP, which hasn’t won a statewide race in Virginia since 2009, saw its legislative majority melt away.

Planned Parenthood releases statement as the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on the Texas abortion ban
“It is devastating that the Supreme Court has allowed Texas’s 6-week abortion ban, S.B. 8, to remain in effect for the last two months, denying the people of Texas their constitutional right to abortion. The Supreme Court must step in so that S.B. 8 can be blocked and Texans’ constitutional rights are restored. But this is bigger than just Texas. Access to abortion is at risk across the country, and 2021 has been the worst year for state legislative attacks on abortion since 1973,” said Jamie Lockhart, the executive director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia. “Here in Virginia, we’ve made tremendous progress for reproductive rights over the last two years. It is absolutely critical that Virginia voters elect Terry McAuliffe for Governor, Hala Ayala for Lieutenant Governor and re-elect Mark Herring for Attorney General, along with Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia’s endorsed House of Delegates candidates, to protect access to safe, legal abortion in the Commonwealth. We cannot go back. It’s imperative we vote as if our rights depend on it - because they do.”
