Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D) claimed victory in Virginia’s seventh congressional district on Tuesday night at 10:15 pm in front of a crowd of her supporters in Fredericksburg. Spanberger ran against Yesli Vega (R).
The race was called by CNN shortly after 10 pm. With 212 of 226 precincts reporting, Spanberger has a four-point (roughly 11,00 votes) lead. Vega has not released a statement at the time this newsletter was published.
Spanberger was first elected to the House in 2018 as a blue wave swept across the country in response to Donald Trump’s first two years as president.
Spanberger governed as a moderate often punching to her left when she felt necessary. But she also held up her end as a Democrat and voted in support of impeachment of Trump in 2019.
Vega is a Prince William Supervisor and former member of law enforcement. She ran a campaign of tying Spanberger to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Joe Biden. The economy remained prevalent for Vega in her stump speech as she blamed Democrats for high inflation.
Spanberger tried to turn the conversation on Vega in the final days by asking what policies Vega would support to try and help bring inflation down.
Vega and Spanberger’s race is being considered the best bellwether for how election night might turn out for each party. A Spanberger loss to many experts was considered a great sign for Republicans across the country.
