Shaia is running against Willett
Riley Shaia is announcing this week that she will be running for the House of Delegates. Shaia will seek the Republican nomination to run against Delegate Rodney Willet (D) in HD-58. This district is in Henrico County.
“I am so excited to jump into public service,” Shaia said. “I love this community and its people, and they deserve a representative in the House of Delegates who will be a strong and independent voice for what they believe in. We need to empower parents when it comes to their child’s education, cut costs for families living on a budget, and keep our neighborhoods safe from crime and fentanyl.”
Shaia is the founder of Riley Shaia Fitness, an online resource for nutrition, fitness, and healthy living. She also serves as a certified group exercise instructor at the Tuckahoe Family YMCA. Shaia graduated from the University of Virginia and Medical College of Virginia with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in physical therapy.
Speaker of the House Todd Gilbert is supporting Shaia. The announcement of her campaign came from his press office.
“We could not be more excited to have Riley on our team this year,” Gilbert said. “The people of western Henrico deserve a Delegate who brings Riley’s level of enthusiasm and excitement, and someone like Riley who both shares their values and understands what’s most important to this community. Make no mistake, with a candidate like Riley, this is a seat we can win.”
HD-58 is a competitive district that Terry McAuliffe won by 5 points in 2021, according to analysis from VPAP.
CASA in Action Endorses Elizabeth Guzman for State Senate
CASA in Action has endorsed Elizabeth Guzman (D) as she is primarying state Sen. Jeremy McPike (D) in SD-29.
“Elizabeth Guzman brings her true self as an immigrant to the fight for workers rights,” said Gustavo Torres, CASA in Action Board President. “Her dedication to delivering results for the community has earned her the endorsement of Virginia’s top immigrant electoral mobilization org. We know Elizabeth will continue to deliver in the Senate because she has already done it in the House and on the Prince William County Jail Board, where she led the charge to end Prince William County’s 287(g) partnership with ICE. From ensuring the undocumented community can access state ID cards and pre-natal care to hosting COVID town halls in Spanish, Elizabeth Guzman has shown up for immigrants time and time again. We can’t wait for her to make history as the first Latinx person elected to the Virginia Senate.”

Sen. Amanda Chase, former Sen. Glen Sturtevant, and Tina Ramirez are participating in a gun debate this weekend. They are seeking the Republican nomination in SD-12. The event is being hosted by the VCDL and will be moderated by Philip Van Cleave.

A Va. bakery gave BLM activists free coffee. Then came the backlash. - Washington Post
By Tim Carman
Brian Noyes and Josephine Gilbert agreed to sit down on March 1 and talk it out. Noyes, founder of the celebrated Red Truck Bakery, and Gilbert, the leader of a loose coalition that demonstrates under the banner of All Lives Matter, wanted to reach an accord before events spun out of control in the usually restful town of Warrenton, Va.
The issue was coffee — and the weekly demonstrations on Courthouse Square in downtown Warrenton, where two groups have been trying to poke and prod the conscience of the city.
Youngkin says he will sign legislation ending higher insurance premiums for tobacco users - Va Mercury
by Leah Small
In an about-face, Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s administration said he supports legislation that would eliminate higher premiums on health insurance for tobacco users in Virginia. Youngkin vetoed similar bipartisan legislation last year on the grounds that it would increase health care costs for Virginians who don’t use tobacco and get rid of a tool meant to incentivize users to kick smoking.
But supporters of two identical bills from the House and Senate that would eliminate the surcharge, a change recommended by Virginia’s Joint Commission on Health Care, say the move would save money for all Virginians with insurance, regardless of whether they use tobacco, and improve access to therapeutic support to quit the habit.
