McAuliffe brings in big money for gubernatorial race, Rasoul announces big fundraising numbers for LG race, Carroll Foy has a TV commercial, and Kiggans raises $100k in a few days
The latest in Virginia politics
This is one of two newsletters going out today. Due to it being campaign finance day (campaigns have to report their earnings for the last quarter), I will have more updates throughout the day on who raised what.
Terry McAuliffe Raises $4.1 Million in Q1 2021, Has $8.5 Million Cash on Hand; Terry Has Raised $10.3 Million To Date
“I am so proud of the unmatched, broad, and diverse coalition of support we are continuing to build across the Commonwealth. Virginians share a vision of creating a stronger, more equitable post-COVID economy that invests in workers, addresses inequities in health care and education, and gives everyone a path to a better, brighter future. We have tackled big challenges together before, and I know we can do it again and make real progress for the Commonwealth" said Terry McAuliffe. "By building on the incredible progress Democrats in Virginia have made over the past eight years, and working with my good friend President Joe Biden, we will build back stronger and more equitably from this COVID crisis and continue to move Virginia forward."
The only other candidate to announce fundraising numbers in the Democratic primary race for governor is Jennifer Carroll Foy, who raised $1.8 million and has $2.3 million cash on hand.
Democratic lieutenant governor candidate Sam Rasoul raised $630K during the first quarter of the year.
State Delegate Sam Rasoul D-Roanoke says he raised a little more than $630K during the first quarter of 2021 in his campaign for lieutenant governor. This brings the total raised in his campaign to more than $1.2 million from 2,200 individual donors, leaving him just shy of having $1 million cash on hand.
“I am running for Lieutenant Governor to prove there is a better way to connect and to win in Virginia,” Rasoul said Thursday. “That’s why every dollar into our campaign is from individuals only. It’s why the first question our volunteers ask on the phone is, “How can we help you?” And it’s why I’ve dedicated staff capacity to supporting down-ballot Democrats through the Impact Center. We are out to prove that lifting up others is not just the right thing to do, but it’s also how to build trust and gain support.”
In addition to using the money for his LG campaign, Rasoul is committed to helping progressive candidates through his ‘Impact Center.’ A spokesperson for his campaign said that he has given money to seven down-ballot candidates.
Rasoul is seeking the nomination in a crowded field of seven other Democrats. He is the only lieutenant governor candidate that has announced a fundraising total at this point. The deadline is midnight tonight for all campaigns to turn in their data.
The Virginia Public Access Project will have the first batch of results at 6 p.m., followed by the full reports being released Friday morning.
Jennifer Carroll Foy Launches First TV Ad on Fight for Quality, Affordable Healthcare
In the ad, Carroll Foy describes how she had to make difficult decisions between paying for her family’s mortgage or the medication keeping her grandmother alive after she suffered a stroke. Carroll Foy reflects on how access to healthcare saved her life and the lives of her twin boys after they were born premature, and her role in successfully expanding Medicaid as a member of the House of Delegates.
Sen. Jen Kiggans Hauls In $100k Since Launching Campaign for Congress in VA-02
Sen. Jen Kiggans, former Navy pilot, geriatric nurse practitioner, and Republican candidate for Congress, has raised over $100,000.00 since launching her campaign in Virginia’s Second Congressional District on Monday, April 12th, she says.
“The men and women of the Second District are fired up to take back this seat — they know what is at stake for our Commonwealth and our nation, and they know I have what it takes to get our country back on the right track,” said Sen. Jen Kiggans. “I’m humbled by the outpouring of support I have received since I launched my campaign and I know the best is yet to come.”
The over $100,000.00 raised since April 12th does not include any personal contributions, loans, or transfers, according to the Kiggans campaign.
