Jennifer McClellan wins special election and will be Virginia’s next member of Congress.
Jennifer McClellan (D) defeated her opponent Leon Benjamin in a special election today to fill a vacant seat in the House of Representatives. The Associated Press called the race less than thirty minutes after polls closed.
The special election was held to fill the seat left vacant after Rep. Donald McEachin passed away last year. VA-04 is based in Richmond, a strong Democratic area.
McClellan has served in the General Assembly since 2006. First in the House of Delegates and then more recently in the state Senate.
The race to fill her seat in the Senate has essentially already begun with McClellan expected to win the special election easily. Del. Lamont Bagby, Del. Dawn Adams, and Alexsis Rodgers have all expressed interest in running for McClellan’s open seat.
