Hala Ayala announces campaign for state Senate
Former delegate and 2021 Democratic lieutenant governor nominee Hala Ayala announced Wednesday that she is running for Virginia’s state Senate in the newly created Senate District 33.
“Right now, too many Virginia families are feeling squeezed,” Ayala said in the announcement. “That’s a worry I know firsthand as a single mom, and it’s why I ran for elected office in the first place — to fight for families like mine who didn’t have a voice. We made progress, bringing down healthcare costs and making communities safer. But Glenn Youngkin and Republicans in Richmond are ignoring our greatest challenges and trying to take us backward.”
SD-33 is based in Prince William County and also includes a portion of Fairfax County.
According to VPAP, Terry McAuliffe won this district with 63% of the vote during 2021’s gubernatorial election. Ayala ran for lieutenant governor during the same cycle but lost to Republican Winsome Sears.
There is no incumbent in this district due to redistricting. Former state delegate and Democratic gubernatorial primary candidate Jennifer Carroll Foy has already declared her candidacy for this seat, however, setting up a competitive 2023 primary.
According to her announcement, Ayala wants to focus on providing a strong education for kids, quality and affordable healthcare, and a transportation system that “works for each community.”
“I’m running for State Senate to get our Commonwealth moving forward once again for families in Prince William and Fairfax Counties,” Ayala said.
