Gilbert endorses Ballard
Speaker of the House Todd Gilbert endorsed Del. Jason Ballard in his reelection campaign. Ballard is being primaried by Jody Pyles.
“I am excited to endorse a true servant leader, Delegate Jason Ballard,” Gilbert said. “Jason is a leader in the House who is getting real results for his constituents. The New River Valley elected a fighter in Jason, and we need him to be re-elected so we can continue advancing a common-sense, conservative agenda to make our Commonwealth the best place to live, work, raise a family, and retire.”
Virginia budget negotiators agree to wait until June - RTD
by Michael Martz
With a potential default of the national debt looming as early as June 1, Virginia budget negotiators say they will wait on the outcome of the confrontation between President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and a crucial report on state revenues collected in May before deciding on how to bridge a $1 billion gap in revisions to the $177 billion, two-year budget.
A budget deal already was unlikely between House Republicans and Senate Democrats before late June, but the negotiators met on Monday, as the debt ceiling conflict escalated. A letter from U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned Congress the United States could reach the limit of its ability to pay existing federal debts on June 1, leading to an unprecedented default that could tank the economy and trigger a recession.
Wilder: Youngkin should fire his diversity chief - RTD
by Dave Ress
Angered that the state’s top official for equal rights says the diversity, equity and inclusion movement is dead, former Gov. Doug Wilder said Virginia’s chief DEI officer, Martin D. Brown, should be fired.
Wilder, the nation’s first elected Black governor, said Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s recent remarks on DEI show he does not understand the real meaning of the concept and especially the word equity. “I see people calling for Mr. Martin Brown to resign. No. Governor Youngkin needs to fire him,” Wilder said. “That’s what you do when somebody isn’t doing his job.”
Three of the four names on upcoming Democratic primary ballots address candidate forum - Progress Index
by Bill Atkinson
Minding the business climate of the area should be near the top of any politician’s agenda. However, in the hot-button arena that is women’s reproductive health, the message is clear – mind your own business.
That was the crux of comments three Democratic legislative hopefuls made in front of a “Meet the Candidates” forum Monday night sponsored by the Southern Virginia Regional Chamber of Commerce. The candidates – Kimberly Pope Adams and Victor McKenzie Jr. in the 82nd House District, and former Del. Lashrecse Aird in the 13th Senate District – shared portions of their platforms with about 40 people inside the Petersburg Public Library’s main auditorium.
